Massachusetts may be one of the smaller states, but it packs an incredible amount of adventure into its borders. From the historic streets of Boston and the beaches of Cape Cod to the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, there is no shortage of places to explore with kids.

And if you are willing to venture west, Massachusetts offers an entirely different kind of adventure — charming small towns, family-friendly attractions, scenic drives, and the beautiful Pioneer Valley... which also happens to be the area where I grew up!

This page is where I am collecting our favorite Massachusetts destinations, attractions, scenic stops, photo spots and family-friendly adventures, with more added as we keep exploring.

Best Time to Visit

Massachusetts gives you four real seasons and a different trip in each one.

Summer is Cape and island season, and everyone knows it. Beaches, bike paths and ferries are at their best, and also at their busiest and most expensive. September is the local secret — the water is still warm, the crowds go home after Labor Day, and rates drop noticeably.

Fall is the reason people fly here. Foliage generally peaks earlier out west — the Berkshires and the Pioneer Valley usually turn in early to mid-October — and a week or two later toward Boston and the coast. If you want the western Massachusetts version, aim earlier than you think.

Two things that shape a summer trip. Only two bridges cross the canal onto Cape Cod, and Friday afternoons heading on and Sunday afternoons heading off are the crunch — going midweek or early morning changes the drive completely. (MassDOT has a long-term bridge replacement program in the works, so it is worth a quick check before a trip a few years out.) And the ferries to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are the only way over: taking a car requires a Steamship Authority reservation that is released months ahead and sells out for summer dates. Walking on is far easier, and both islands are very manageable on bikes and buses.

Winter and spring: Boston stays fully open year-round, the Berkshires turn into ski country, and much of the Cape and the islands go quiet from November until spring. Seasonal attractions like Six Flags New England run roughly spring through the fall — check opening dates before building a day around one.

What to Expect

Getting there: Boston Logan is the main airport and sits practically in the city — the subway runs from the terminals. Bradley, just over the Connecticut line, is much closer for the Pioneer Valley; Providence works for the South Coast.

Distances: the whole state is small. Boston to Springfield is about ninety minutes, Boston to Cape Cod an hour and a half without traffic, and Springfield to the Berkshires under an hour. You can genuinely combine a city weekend and a western Massachusetts road trip in the same week.

Getting around: a car everywhere except Boston, where parking is expensive and the T is genuinely good. On the Cape and the islands, bikes do a lot of the work.

Rotaries. New England roundabouts, and there are a lot of them on the Cape. Yield to traffic already in the circle, signal on the way out, and do not panic.

Weather: coastal fog and sea breezes make the Cape cooler than inland, and it can be twenty degrees warmer in Springfield than on the beach on the same afternoon. Pack a layer even in July.

Budget: Boston and the islands run high, especially in summer. Western Massachusetts is markedly more affordable and one of the reasons a Pioneer Valley leg is such good value.

Springfield is a fun destination to add to a Massachusetts family road trip, especially when you're looking for kid-friendly attractions beyond the major tourist destinations.

Located in Western Massachusetts, Springfield offers a mix of museums, family attractions, parks, and things to do that can make it an easy stop for families exploring the region. Our favorites were the Dr. Seuss Museum & the Springfield Science Museum. Springfield is also home to The Basketball Hall of Fame, situated on the Connecticut River.

Just across the river, in Agawam, is Six Flags New England amusement park and Hurricane Harbor water park.
