South Carolina, Family-Friendly Adventures
South Carolina is one of those states that can offer a little bit of everything for a family adventure. From historic cities and charming Southern towns to beautiful beaches, lake days, and laid-back coastal getaways, there are plenty of ways to explore the Palmetto State with kids.
Whether you are planning a South Carolina road trip, a beach vacation, a weekend getaway, or simply looking for a new family-friendly destination close to home — Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Lake Murray — South Carolina has plenty to discover.
This page is where I am collecting our favorite South Carolina destinations, attractions, scenic stops, photo spots and family-friendly adventures, with more added as we keep exploring.
Destinations
The Map

Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. Late March through May brings the azaleas out in Charleston and comfortable days everywhere, and September through early November gives you warm ocean water with thinner crowds and lower rates.
Summer is peak beach season and peak everything else — hot, humid, and busy from Myrtle Beach to Hilton Head. It is still a wonderful time to be on the coast, but book early and plan the middle of the day around water or air conditioning.
One thing to keep in mind for a coastal trip: Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with the highest activity from August into October. It rarely changes a trip, but it is a good reason to buy refundable lodging or travel insurance for a late-summer beach week.
If you are anywhere near Columbia in May, Congaree National Park has one of the most remarkable things in the state — a week of synchronous fireflies in mid-May, where thousands of them blink in unison after dark. Viewing is by lottery through recreation.gov, with applications opening in early April and only a small number of vehicle passes per night, so it takes planning a season ahead. The park itself is free to enter the rest of the year, and yes, the mosquito meter at the visitor center is real.
What to Expect
Getting there: Charleston and Myrtle Beach both have their own airports, Columbia sits in the middle of the state, and Savannah/Hilton Head serves the southern coast. Greenville-Spartanburg covers the Upstate.
Distances: South Carolina is refreshingly compact. Columbia to Charleston is about two hours, Columbia to Myrtle Beach roughly three, and Charleston to Hilton Head about two. You can genuinely combine an inland stop and a beach week in the same trip.
Getting around: a car. Hilton Head is the exception — it has an excellent network of bike paths, and a lot of families park once and ride for the week.
Heat and sun: the Lowcountry humidity is no joke from June through September. Start outdoor plans early, carry more water than you think, and reapply sunscreen more often than feels necessary.
Bugs: mosquitoes and no-see-ums are part of the deal near the marshes, especially at dusk. Repellent lives in the beach bag.
Budget: moderate, with real seasonal swings on the coast — the same Myrtle Beach condo can cost half as much in October as it does in July.
Things to Do in South Carolina With Kids
A historic city, a lake, a barrier island, a boardwalk and a few small towns in between — all within a couple of hours of each other. Here is what I am covering so far, with full guides on the way.
Columbia
The capital, in the middleAs South Carolina's capital city, Columbia makes a great starting point for exploring the center of the state. This is also where my daughter was born!
Families can find a mix of outdoor adventures, museums, zoos, parks, attractions, restaurants, and things to do throughout the city and along the river. Columbia is also a convenient stop for a South Carolina road trip, particularly if you're traveling between the state's inland and coastal destinations.

Lake Murray
Just west of ColumbiaIf your family loves being on the water, Lake Murray is a South Carolina destination worth adding to your list.
Located near Columbia, the lake offers opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, paddleboarding, relaxing by the water, and enjoying a slower-paced family getaway. It's also an easy destination to combine with a Columbia trip.
When I was in college, my parents had a house on Lake Murray. I'd come home from chilly Colorado back to a palmetto tree paradise... it sure was Heaven. I'll tell you all the best hangout spots (kid-friendly, of course) and things to do around the lake in my guide.

Charleston
The LowcountryCharleston is one of the most iconic destinations in South Carolina and an especially memorable place to explore with kids.
Historic streets, colorful buildings, waterfront views, beautiful parks, Southern food, and nearby beaches make Charleston a destination where you can easily fill several days without running out of things to see and do. We always have a blast visiting this city!

Myrtle Beach
The Grand StrandMyrtle Beach is a classic South Carolina family vacation destination for good reason.
With miles of coastline, family-friendly attractions, entertainment, restaurants, and plenty of ways to spend a day by the ocean, Myrtle Beach makes it easy to build a vacation around fun in the sun.
Whether you're planning a traditional beach vacation or using Myrtle Beach as part of a larger coastal road trip, there is plenty for families to discover. Don't forget to wake up early one morning to catch an East Coast sunrise! We promise it's worth it.

Hilton Head
The southern coastHilton Head Island offers a more relaxed Lowcountry beach experience and is a fantastic destination for a family getaway.
From beautiful beaches and outdoor adventures to biking, wildlife, water activities, and exploring the island, Hilton Head gives families plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy time together.

Hartsville
The Pee DeeHartsville offers a different side of South Carolina than the state's major tourist destinations.
This charming inland community can be a fun addition to a South Carolina road trip, particularly for families who enjoy discovering smaller towns and finding local attractions and experiences along the way. Our favorite Hartsville pit stop is a super fun water park that we'll dive into in the guide.

Summerville
Outside CharlestonKnown for its charming downtown and Southern small-town atmosphere, Summerville is an easy addition to a Lowcountry itinerary.
Its location also makes it a convenient base or stop when exploring the greater Charleston area, giving families an opportunity to experience a quieter side of the Lowcountry beyond the major tourist attractions.

John's Island
Across the Stono RiverJohn's Island offers a chance to experience the Lowcountry beyond downtown Charleston.
With beautiful natural scenery, historic sites, coastal landscapes, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and explore, John's Island can be a great addition to a Charleston-area family itinerary.
It's also an excellent destination for families who want to combine a Charleston city adventure with some of the surrounding area's natural beauty, like the Angel Oak tree.
