South Dakota, Family-Friendly Adventures
South Dakota might not be the first state that comes to mind when you think about family vacations — but it should be. From the dramatic landscapes of Badlands National Park to the winding roads of the Black Hills, South Dakota is packed with unique attractions, historic towns, wildlife, scenic drives, and family-friendly adventures.
The Black Hills in particular make an incredible family road-trip destination. You can see Mount Rushmore, drive the famous Needles Highway, explore Custer State Park, visit historic Deadwood, and discover countless scenic stops — all while experiencing a part of the country that feels completely different from home.
This page is where I am collecting our favorite South Dakota destinations, attractions, scenic drives, photo spots and family-friendly adventures, with more added as we keep exploring.
Destinations
The Map
Tap a pin to jump to that stop. Pink marks the places we have been; teal is still on our list. Nearly everything here sits inside the Black Hills, within about an hour of each other, so those pins step out into two columns beside their true spots.
Best Time to Visit
Late May through September is when everything in the Black Hills is open at once — the scenic highways, the campgrounds, the lodges, the cave tours. Summer days are warm and dry, and afternoon thunderstorms roll through quickly.
One week to plan around: the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which runs August 7–16 in 2026. It brings hundreds of thousands of visitors into the northern hills, and lodging across the whole region books up and prices jump. Either build your trip around it on purpose or avoid those dates entirely.
Needles Highway closes to vehicles with the first snow of the season and does not reopen until April 1 at the earliest, depending on conditions. Iron Mountain Road also closes periodically through the winter. If those drives are the reason you are going, aim for summer or early fall.
September is my quiet pick — the rally crowds are gone, the roads are still open, and the hills start turning. Winter is beautiful and very quiet, but expect closed scenic routes and reduced hours at most attractions.
What to Expect
Getting there: Rapid City Regional is the airport for the Black Hills and puts you about half an hour from most of this page. Sioux Falls works if you are starting on the eastern side of the state.
Distances: this is the easy part. Rapid City to Badlands is about an hour, to Deadwood about an hour, and the Mount Rushmore, Keystone, Hill City, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park cluster is all within twenty to forty minutes of itself. Crossing the whole state to Sioux Falls is a different story — closer to five and a half hours.
Vehicle size matters here. The tunnels on Needles Highway are genuinely narrow — the Needles Eye Tunnel is 8 feet wide and 9 feet 9 inches high — and the Iron Mountain Road tunnels are not much bigger. Large RVs, trailers and dually trucks cannot get through. Check your dimensions before you commit to those drives.
Wildlife: Custer State Park has a large bison herd, and they use the road. Stay in your car, give them room, and do not let kids out for a photo. The same goes for the pronghorn, elk and burros.
Fees: Custer State Park charges its own park entrance license, separate from any national park pass, and cave tours at Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are ticketed and regularly sell out in summer — book those ahead.
Budget: reasonable by national park standards, with rally week the glaring exception.
Things to Do in South Dakota With Kids
South Dakota is made for road trips. The Black Hills alone offer enough attractions and scenic drives to fill several days, while the Badlands and other eastern South Dakota destinations make it easy to extend your adventure. Here is what I am covering so far, with full guides on the way.
Custer State Park
Southern Black HillsCuster State Park is one of the highlights of any Black Hills family adventure.
With dramatic granite formations, winding roads, mountain scenery, wildlife, and beautiful landscapes around seemingly every corner, the park offers countless opportunities for families to explore South Dakota's outdoors.
It's also one of those destinations where simply driving through the park can become part of the adventure.

Deadwood
Northern Black HillsStep into South Dakota's Wild West history in Deadwood.
This historic Black Hills town is known for its Old West character, historic buildings, shops, restaurants, and colorful history.
It's a fun destination for families who enjoy history and unique small towns — and an easy addition to a larger Black Hills road trip.

Crazy Horse Memorial
Near CusterThe Crazy Horse Memorial is one of the most recognizable attractions in the Black Hills.
The enormous mountain carving is still a work in progress, making it unlike many other major landmarks you'll encounter on a road trip.
For families, it's also an opportunity to learn more about the history and culture connected to the memorial and the surrounding Black Hills.

Keystone
Below Mount RushmoreKeystone is a small Black Hills town with a big connection to one of South Dakota's most famous attractions: Mount Rushmore.
Its location makes it an especially convenient place to stay while exploring the surrounding Black Hills, and the town itself offers plenty of opportunities to stop, eat, shop, and explore.

Badlands National Park
East of the hillsBadlands National Park is one of the most visually striking places in South Dakota.
The colorful rock formations, deep canyons, layered landscapes, and wide-open views make the park feel completely different from the nearby Black Hills.
For families, the scenic drive alone can be an incredible experience, with plenty of opportunities to stop, take photographs, and experience the landscape.

Hill City
The heart of the hillsLocated in the heart of the Black Hills, Hill City is a charming small town and a convenient stop while exploring the region.

Needles Highway
Scenic driveIf you love scenic drives, the Needles Highway belongs on your South Dakota bucket list.
The route winds through the Black Hills with dramatic granite formations, narrow passages, and incredible mountain scenery.

Western South DakotaThe Black Hills are the heart of a South Dakota family road trip.

One of the best things about the Black Hills is how much you can experience within a relatively compact area. That makes it particularly appealing for families who want to see a lot without spending their entire vacation driving between destinations.
