Washington, Family-Friendly Adventures
Washington is one of those states that has a little bit of everything for an adventurous mom and her kids — big-city attractions, beautiful waterfronts, hands-on museums, mountains an hour from the city, and plenty of places to make memories together.
So far our map runs from Seattle and Pike Place Market east to Lake Sammamish and south to Point Defiance in Tacoma — and this page is where I am collecting all of it as we go.

Best Time to Visit
Western Washington has a reputation for rain, and it earns it from roughly October through May. For the trips on this page, July through September is ideally the sweet spot — long dry days, comfortable temperatures, and every ferry, beach, and mountain road open.
If the mountains are on your list, timing matters more. Mount Rainier's Sunrise area and the North Cascades Highway (SR 20) are seasonal — SR 20 typically closes for the winter and reopens in spring, and Rainier has used timed-entry reservations for its busiest corridors in recent summers, so check the park and WSDOT sites before you drive.
Shoulder season (late spring, early fall) is quieter and cheaper, and the city stops — the Space Needle, the Children's Museum, Pike Place — work in any weather, which makes Seattle a forgiving place to travel with kids year-round. We frequently visit in December through March & are still able to do everything here.
What to Expect
Getting there: Sea-Tac is the main hub. The Link light rail runs from the airport into downtown Seattle, which means you can land and start your trip without a rental car.
Getting around: In Seattle, light rail, buses, and walking cover most of what you want to see. For Bellevue, Lake Sammamish, Tacoma, and anything in the mountains, you will want a car.
Budget: Mid-range to higher — Seattle lodging runs well above small-town prices in summer, and staying just outside the city center is usually the easiest place to save.
Weather: Layers, always. Mornings are cool even in July, and a packable rain jacket earns its space in the bag nine months of the year.
Safety: The destinations on this page are busy, family-filled places. Standard city awareness downtown, and the usual daylight-and-a-plan rule for trailheads.

Seattle Space Needle
Seattle CenterNo first-time Seattle adventure would be complete without seeing the iconic Space Needle.
Rising above Seattle Center, it offers incredible views of the city and the surrounding Pacific Northwest landscape — one of those quintessential Seattle experiences that is especially fun to add to a first visit.

Seattle CenterTraveling with younger kids? The Seattle Children's Museum is a great option for adding an interactive, hands-on stop to your Seattle itinerary.
It is a perfect reminder that family travel does not have to mean sightseeing every day. Sometimes the best travel memories come from simply giving kids a place where they can play, explore, and be themselves.

Pike Place Market
Downtown SeattlePike Place Market is one of Seattle's most recognizable destinations — and it is worth experiencing even if you only have a limited amount of time in the city.
With vendors, food, flowers, shops, and plenty to see around every corner, it is an easy place to work into a Seattle itinerary.

Bellevue
Across Lake WashingtonJust across Lake Washington from Seattle, Bellevue makes a great addition to a Washington family adventure.
With shopping, restaurants, parks, attractions, and easy access to the surrounding area, it can be a destination of its own or a convenient home base for exploring the Seattle region.

Lake Sammamish
East of BellevueIf you are looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of Seattle, Lake Sammamish offers a completely different side of the Pacific Northwest.
The lake and surrounding communities are a chance to slow down, get outside, and spend some time near the water.

Point Defiance Park
TacomaPoint Defiance Park is one of the places that deserves a spot on your Tacoma itinerary.
With a giant wooden playground, beautiful scenery, waterfront views, gardens, trails, and family-friendly attractions nearby, there are plenty of ways to get outside and experience the Pacific Northwest — especially at sunset.
